This post will not deal with the strike itself. It raises other issues that needs to be addressed. This strike affects other people like those who live in rural Ireland. Not all routes are economically viable. But they have a social function. The rural bus route ensures that cars are used less. Using private operators in competition with the national bus company means that some routes are in danger. It increases car dependence in Ireland. We also have the danger of a private monopoly resplacing the present situation. This situation would mean we would loose democratic control of transport policy.
We have a Minister for Transport who is not doing his job. when Shane Ross was in opposition he followed every populist policy. Where is Shane Ross?
If we use commercial considerations for transport will our rail link go? Will the taxpayer give welfare to private operators.
