In defence of the self employed.

I noticed from social media that the Conservative government in Britain has increased the social insurance contribution that the self employed must pay. This is a tax increase on vulnerable workers. Self employed people are people like freelance writers, journalists, artists and your local plumber. These people in insecure employment with less rights than some other workers should be a concern to all decent people.

Self employed people are regarded as employers in relation to the tax and welfare system. But they are not the multi millionaires who can live a millionaire lifestyle after they go broke. If they go broke they will not be able to receive welfare. As I said in the past starvation is not the solution to poverty. But it seems to me that some reactionary thinkers thing the burden of welfare can be resolved by starving the people on welfare. I must use these words because we must cut through the welfare reform jargon if we as a society are to develop a humane community. Self employed workers deserve rights like everyone else.

The rise of extremist  parties is a warning to moderate people that we need new economic policies that provides for a humane society. People after the 2nd world war in democratic societies decided to create a society where the needs of the  people were met. A new Keynesian programme is needed for the 21st century.
