Christianity began as a persecuted religion led by ordinary people for over 300 years. When Constantine became Emperor he was the first Christian Emperor of Rome. It might be better to say that he was the first Emperor who happened to be a Christian. It was around 80 years after his death that Christianity sought to control the state. Constantine issued the Edict of Milan. This edict declared complete freedom of worship. It called on the different believers to pray for the Emperor. A modern version of the edit would be complete freedom of worship and freedom for those who have no religion. A Christian who supports the separation of church and state is closer to real traditional Christianity than someone who believes that church law should be state law. I approach the question of a secular state from my faith others have different reasons for their support of a secular state. Theocratic states puts political power into the hands of unelected religious leaders who do great harm to everyone. I believe in freedom for everyone and I stand with everyone who suffers from any confessional state.
