The Austrian Presidential election is over. The independent candidate who was linked to the Greens barely won the election. His opponent is a member of the far right Freedom Party. The 2 major parties who dominated Austrian politics the Social Democrats and the conservative Christian Democrats saw their vote fall. It seems to me that during this era of economic uncertainty the traditional parties see a fall in their vote while extremist parties of the extreme right and left are gaining in power and support. There are voters that feel left out and are in an unthinking way are seeing solutions to this crisis. How social democracy respond to this crisis could determine what happens next. Maybe we should accept that the present economic model has failed and reread Keynes.
Funding for writing is a challenge but it provides opportunities too. I am reflecting on this issue.
Has the nanny state replaced the welfare state? The state seems to be telling adults how to lead our lives. But when we need assistance we could be told it is our fault and go away. Liberty should mean the liberty to make mistakes. Some so called liberals believe that in certain areas the state has the right to tell us how we live. While in other areas they claim to defend liberty. In the past the Church told us how to live for the good of our souls. Now the state tells us how to live for the good of our bodies.
