The Labour Party at conference argued and publically voted for the restoration of town councils. The link between the democratic servants of the people and the voters in Ireland is weak. Getting rid of town councils has made a bad decision worse. Voters who want to defend themselves locally needs their TDs. No wonder independent TDs are elected. Especially those politicans who focus on local issues. The centralisation of power politically and economically has benefited the elites and it has harmed the people. We need to decentralise power in Ireland. Having town councils is a good start. Business rates were lower in Mallow than they were in the county. The cost to small business of not having town councils is real. At conference I voted to restore town councils. Ireland needs more democracy not less.
As we wait for the posibile formation of a government I hope town councils will be restored.
