local democracy.

I decided to recycle my rubbish at my local recycling centre in Mallow. But the centre’s hours were cut. I went to the next nearest centre in Kanturk which is about a half an hour drive away. Personally I found the extra drive bad for the environment. It was ironic in a way.

These decisions are made by managers who don’t consult the people. As George Bernard Shaw said social democracy is based on democracy. I believe that for democracy to work well it needs to be decentralised. Local government must be run for and by the local people. Local government must be local democracy. In our system managers are too powerful and the councilors have too little real power. The recent reforms reduced the numbers of councilors and councils. They have reduced local democracy even further and centralised power in Dublin. The struggle for democracy continues.
