what type of economy do we want?

Sometimes I feel like a prophet in the wilderness. People seem to get caught up in the smaller problems of life that the bigger picture gets lost. Then some people can’t see that other ways of organising society are possible. The truth is nothing stays the same. In the last 25 years we have seen the fall of the Berlin Wall and the crisis of market fundamentalism.

After the experience of the 1929 Wall Street crash and World War two democratic parties of both left and right agreed on a mixed economy where market and state where used to produce economic growth and increase the welfare state. It wasn’t perfect it needed reform but it worked. The mixed economy of the social market or social democracy helped the middle class.

The reactionary policies of neo liberalism is reducing democracy the middle class it is reducing competition as big business gets bigger and individual liberty is reduced as the state becomes increasingly authorian.

I think we need to challenge the status quo. There was a time where conservatives and social democrats or the liberal left had a different vision. If we want to improve our society we need to look at that vision again.
