social democracy today

This week was interesting with the arrest and release of Gerry Adams of Sein Fein. I wonder how will this development affect the local and European elections? I will not comment on this case as I believe that personality politics does not advance our goal of a better society. Only the battle of ideas can advance much needed change. It is up to us the voters to decide.
Democracy is a work in progress. We are always improving the democratic process. We should be humble enough to learn from other people. Democracy has its problems but as Winston Churchill said democracy is better than the alternatives
The results of the Anglo trial shows to me that blaming individuals for the mess Ireland is in will not help us resolve this crisis. Light touch regulation, cheap money and and a the property bubble was the result of poor state planning. Vested interests didn’t help either. We need a fair based rule of law. We need a state system that properly regulate the market. We need democracy to insure that the system reflects the will of the people. We need to do more than that but these basic policy changes would provide for a sounder economic foundation for the Irish people.
