social democracy today

As tomorrow is Saint Patrick day I wish everyone a happy Saint Patrick day especially those who are far from home. Tony Benn died this week. I am sad that he died. I disagreed with some of his policies I do recognise that he upheld democracy. Where I disagreed with Tony Benn was in relation to Ireland. If Britain pulled out of Ireland at the height of the violence we would suffer a national civil war. No one including myself have all the answers.
Centuries of absolute rule in Russia and Ukraine has meant that any chance of moderate democratic rule is hard to achieve. Ukraine is in crisis. On one side we have a reactionary class in Moscow seeking to expand its influence. But the government in Kiev is controlled by reactionary and even fascist forces. A slim chance of a solution would involve finding and uniting the centre left and centre right around the ideas of liberal democracy. The E.U. is foolish to take sides in this dispute. The E.U. has enough problems of its own right now. The Crimea vote today will not change the fact that reactionaries have the power. The communist tyranny since 1917 destroyed any chance that Russia would have become a social democracy. I blame both the Tzars and the communists for the present mess in that region.
