social democracy today

Neo liberal capitalism has led Ireland into its present mess. Yet the same ideology that got us into this mess is offered as the solution to our present crisis. The truth is if opinion polls and democratic elections are any guide is that social democracy is weak in Ireland. It is getting weaker. Why is this so. Personally I don’t know the answer to this question. With utopian solutions and more of the same on offer it is important that the social democratic solution is presented in clear simple language. Germany in the 1920s saw the weakness of social democracy. When the 1929 crisis happened Hitler came to power and democracy died in Germany. I am not saying that Ireland is on the way to dictatorship but we should be careful. We should defend democracy no matter what. I get the impression that Irish people don’t like what is happening. But I also get the impression that the Irish people are confused. Many people blame banks, politics and individuals but the ideology behind the crisis isn’t presented to the people. The media doesn’t allow a discussion of the alternatives on offer. Ireland is a conservative country. new ideas take time to win over the hearts and minds of the people. I have hope that justice will reign in the end.

Social democracy may be weak in Ireland. There are other countries where we are weaker. In the United States the people have a choice between 2 right wing big business supporting parties. No wonder the poor and the middle class suffer so much in the USA.y
